Video: Have you experienced Art Everywhere yet?

Warhol and I, together at last: The artist's famous painting is part of the nationwide Art Everywhere outdoor art show.

Ever wonder how many ads you walk or drive past each day? Is it dozens? Hundreds? Dare I say thousands?

So much public space is used to sell us things that our environments can become wallpaper. With today's launch of Art Everywhere, though, perhaps we'll start looking around a little more.

Billed as the USA's largest-ever outdoor art show, Art Everywhere puts famous works of art onto more than 50,000 displays nationwide. From now through Aug. 31, you'll likely see the works at airports, bus shelters, malls, movie theaters and on your morning commute. (An interactive map at arteverywhereus.org details specific locations.)

I happened to be in Times Square when Art Everywhere launched this morning, and, I must say, it was pretty cool to view Warhol, Hopper, O'Keeffe, de Kooning and other artists instead of giant, scary ads. In the video above (made with my colleagues Eli Blumenthal and Rebecca Castagna), you can get a sneak peek and learn more about the initiative.

The show was created in partnership with five museums: the National Gallery of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Dallas Museum of Art. The 58 selected works were determined via online vote and highlight American artists dating from the 18th century (John Singleton Copley's Watson and the Shark, 1778) to today (Cindy Sherman's Untitled Self-Portrait, 2008).

Art Everywhere made its debut last year in the U.K. and I hope it catches on worldwide. Though I try to visit museums when I can, it's nice to have art come to me, for free, as a creative interruption in the midst of a frantic day.
